One of the things that stuck out to me while i was reading this essay what the fact that Hooks says that she is going to her grandmother's house. Even though both of her grandparents lives there. I also do the same thing. I refer to grandparent's house as my grandma's. I think I do this because my grandma is the one who takes care of anything and everything that happenes in the house..
When Hooks begins to talk about the homeplace and what it is used for I also agree. I think that your home should be were you regain strength that the world has drained out of you. Also you should feel safe and be able to find comfort. The "homeplace" should be a place of refuge.

What you said about your grandma's house is so true. I do the excact same thing. My grandpa lives there but I always acknowledge the house is my grandma's. That is probably because she does all the cooking, cleaning etc. I also think we recognize our grandma's as the ones who interact with family more. It's more usual that she will call you and ivite you over for dinner, than it is for your grandpa to due the same.
I agree with your response because I refer to my grandparents' house as my grandmother's house also. Also, the idea about regaining strength when you get home makes sense. Work and school take a lot out of people, and when they know that they are coming home to a place where they can relax, it can restore a lot of what was drained during the day
...the fact that Hooks says that she is going to her grandmother's house. Even though both of her grandparents lives there.
This is an important thing you pointed out that I kind of overlooked in the beginning. It's been so long that I don't remember for sure how I use this, but I'd reason to believe that when I was younger I always said grandma's house as well, mainly for the fact that, as a child, you see your grandmother always upkeeping the home, cooking, and focusing on you.
Melissa Corrigan... you are right again. I like to refer to my grandparents house as grandmas simply because of the fact that when you think of grandmas house, you think of this warm, cozy, love filled, tidy place that is usually given by the grandma. Grandpa is usually the cute ole fellow who deals with the finances and home improvement projects and sits on his own lil couch watching tv.
I agree with you Melissa. I did the same thing when I was little and going to my grandparents house. I think it also has something to do with who you spend the majority of your time with there. For example, I would draw with my papa (grandpa), but the majority of the time I went swimming with my busha (grandma), baked with her, colored with her, or ate with her right next to me. So I was influenced more by my busha than papa.
stef...I have a papa too!! lol
